Yesterday on April 23, the inhabitants of the city of Horokhiv (about 50 km from Lutsk) had reached out to us. They reported that one of the streets of the city is paved with Jewish headstones and sent us pictures. Today the members of our community, together with Volunteer Community responded to the scene to find that out.
Indeed, the kerb-stones down the street were matzevot from Jewish cemetery. We discovered about 40 headstones. And we think this is not the limit. None of the residents were interviewed couldn't tell us how matzevot end up on the curb…
City mayor, when we met, promised to assist with the problem of
this question. We discussed and explored the opportunity to move
headstones to a site where historically was the Jewish cemetery. At that place had already been established the memorial marking.
Local residents also offered their assistance.
Let us hope we'll do it right.
